Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia, or gynaecomastia, is a condition where male breasts become overdeveloped. This condition is very common during the teenage years, affecting nearly two of three teenage boys. It happens when too much estrogen is in the body and often resolves itself as hormone levels regulate. However, in some cases, excess breast tissue remains. Other causes of extra breast tissue in men are obesity, drugs or certain medications, and, on a very rare basis, tumors.
What is gynecomastia surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery is the surgical removal of breast tissue and fatty tissue. This can be done through incisions or through liposuction procedures. If incisions are required, our surgeons will make an effort to hide those scars at the edges of the areola. Our surgeons will discuss your options and explain the results you can expect from each.
What does gynecomastia surgery involve?
Gynecomastia surgery is normally performed under general anesthesia. It can be performed as an inpatient or outpatient procedure depending on the extent of your surgery. The surgery involves either incisions to remove tissue or incision to insert ultrasound tools.
What to expect after gynecomastia surgery
After gynecomastia surgery, you will need to wear a compression garment like an elastic band or vest over your gauze dressing. You will be bruised and swollen for a few days, but the compression garment should help control swelling. You will need to wear the compression vest under your clothes for a few weeks. Stitches will be removed after a few days.
You will be able to return to work after three to five days. You will need to avoid lifting things and other strenuous activities for a few weeks.
Gynecomastia surgery side effects and risks
Bleeding and infection are uncommon side effects of gynecomastia, but can be serious. Breast skin or nipples might be numb after surgery, but this can resolve itself as swelling goes down. Some numbness, however, might be permanent.
